Healthway was established in 1991 under the Tobacco Control Act 1990 as a statutory body with objectives to: • fund activities that promote health, particularly that of young people, and provide research grants to organisations engaged in health promotion programs and research; and • offer sports, arts and racing: (i) a replacement source of funding for those activities which were sponsored by the tobacco industry; (Tobacco sponsorship and advertising in Western Australia was phased out by 1992).
(ii) sponsorship support for sport, arts and racing activities which encourage healthy lifestyles and provide opportunities to promote health messages. Programs To meet its objectives, Healthway has developed a range of funding programs which include:
• Health Promotion Projects Healthway provides grants to health and research organisations as well as sponsorships to sport, arts, racing and community groups which encourage healthy lifestyles and advance health promotion programs. Healthway receives approximately $17 million annually to provide sponsorships and grants. Of this health promotion projects and health promotion research grants are each allocated approximately $2.4 million. Additionally Healthway provides more than $8 million per year for sponsorship of sport, arts and racing programs and $1.7 million to support sponsorships. |
