Founded about 40 years ago, the UWA Volleyball Club is supported by UWA Sports and is based at the UWA Recreation Centre just off Stirling Hwy, Crawley. Training is at the UWA gym on either Tuesday or Thursday nights after 6pm Competitions: The prime competition is the Perth Volleyball League which runs over the winter months and administered by Volleyball WA, Games for all grades are played on Sundays at Loftus Recreation Centre in Leederville from 9am til 6pm. There are the occasional game on Friday nights as well. VWA runs a short pre-PVL Summer League from mid-March to mid-April which is used to migrate people from the beach season back to indoor. Volleyball WA also runs Beach competitions over summer. The UWA Volleyball Club does not directly get involved in Beach, but many members find a partner and enter the regular weekend competitions. Various sports centres around Perth also play Indoor Beach. UWA is committed to attending country tournaments during the season which are primarily social events within a competitive environment. Weekend tournaments are held at Mandurah, Albany, Collie & Bunbury. Approximate costs to join and play (final costs yet to be finalised): Yearly Membership Fee – Junior/Students ~$80 to $100 pa Senior $140 pa Short-term memberships – pro-rata basis Team Shorts - $30 Team Shirt - $40 deposit (returned at season’s end) Game fees - $7 to $10 per game (payable to UWA in 3 lumps) VWA registration - $65pa (payable to VWA), Juniors $35 Social Volleyball: The club runs a social drop-in night at the UWA Rec centre on Monday nights from 8pm til $10pm. Open almost every Monday night except when UWA exams are on and Easter, Anzac etc. Cost is $5 per night. Club Structure: The club is democratically run with a President (James Taylor), Vice-President (Steph Luke) Treasurer (Euan Cameron), Secretary (Katie Rolston) and General committee (Derek Scales, Christine George). Elections are held every year around October. The club entered 8 teams in the PVL competition in 2009, 4 men’s teams and 4 women’s teams. Super League being the premiere grade, with Division 1,2 & 3 below. There are approximately 6 other metropolitan clubs that play in the PVL. See the VWA website for more info. Each team has a 2-hour training block with a coach. Training will be at UWA on Tues or Thur. Days and times to be determined after trials. Next Steps to join: On Sunday March 14th, the club will be holding trials at the UWA Rec centre. 1pm to 3pm for women followed by men from 3pm to 5pm. If you wish to join the club, you need to come along to the trials and register your interest. If you can’t make it, you must advise Euan or James of your interest prior to the trials.
