Another year down and it’s been an amazing year for the club. The club expanded this year dramatically from having fielded 6 teams (3 male and 3 female) last year to 8 teams (4 male and 4 female) this year. Unsurprisingly I must thank all the committee members and coaches for their tireless effort throughout the year to ensure that such growth reaped its due rewards.

The year started well with a large turnout to trials back in March, including a number of players investigating the development that UWAVC has been implementing over the past few seasons. Luckily they were impressed and along with a number of imports, as is always the case with university studies, we have been able to field a number of very strong teams. The most impressive thing for me this year was the depth that each of the squads were able to find and as such UWAVC has consistently been fielding strong teams week in – week out regardless of injuries that have cropped up throughout the year.

As a result it was brilliant that out of 8 teams entered into the Perth Volleyball League, 5 of them made finals berths and of those teams 4 of them made Grand finals. On this note I’d like to congratulate the Superleague women and the Division 1 women on their success (many thanks to Gavin and Euan as well for coaching the teams so successfully throughout the year).

As I write this for me it is coming to an end of my role within UWAVC as President and I look forward to the way that James and his committee will take the club forward over the coming 12 months. The developments this year have been fantastic but there are many more avenues to be explored and many more opportunities for members to make their mark within the club (coaching juniors within schools for instance would be a great start to a more substantial coaching career).

Finally, I’d like to once again thank everyone that has helped me out through the year and been involved in the club and most importantly I’d like to thank all the players. Without you guys and gals the club wouldn’t exist, wouldn’t be successful and the Perth Volleyball League would be a lot worse off.

All the best and see you on the beach,

Derek
